Start from our internship template

Make your own copy in Google Docs (sign in first; a school account works), or download it as a Word file.

When you're done, save it as a PDF. In Google Docs: File, then Download, then PDF document. In Word: File, then Save As, then PDF.

Use an AI chatbot as a coach

Copy a prompt, paste it into a chatbot, and replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

What is an AI chatbot?

A chatbot is a website or app you talk to by typing. You ask a question or paste some text, and it writes an answer back in plain language. You can keep going back and forth, like texting. What you type to it is called a prompt.

It can be wrong
Chatbots sometimes make things up. Check every line against what you really did.
Each one has its own age rules
ChatGPT: 13 and up, with a parent's OK if you're under 18. Gemini: depends on your Google or school account. Claude: 18 and up. Use the one your school or parent allows.

3 rules for using AI on a resume

  1. Keep it true. Never let AI add a job, award, or number that didn't happen.
  2. Protect your info. Delete your phone, email, and address before you paste.
  3. Make it yours. Rewrite what AI gives you so it sounds like you.

The 15-second test

Employers often decide in seconds whether to keep reading. Look at Priya's resume for 15 seconds, the way they would, and notice what jumps out.

Checklist: before you send it

Open your resume next to this page and go down the list.

How it looks

  • Fits on one page
  • Your name is the largest text
  • One font, consistent sizes
  • Dates use the same format everywhere

What it says

  • Every bullet starts with an action verb
  • At least 3 bullets include a number
  • It uses words from the internship posting
  • No spelling errors (read it out loud)

Ready for a recruiter to reply

  • Your email sounds professional (first.last@)
  • Your voicemail is set up and the mailbox isn't full
  • Your voicemail greeting says your first name only: no music, no jokes, and never your school or where you are. Example: "Hi, you've reached Sam. Leave your name and number, and I'll call you back."
  • Saved as a PDF. Keep one master copy in Google Docs, and download a new PDF each time you send it.
  • The file name has your name and today's date, like First-Last-Resume-2026-10-07.pdf. Skip words like "final" or "v2".

Safety and privacy

A resume gets forwarded, printed, and uploaded to sites you'll never see. Put on it only what a stranger needs to offer you an interview.

  • City and state only. No street address.
  • No birthdate, age, Social Security number, student ID, or photo
  • Remove your contact info before pasting your resume into an AI chatbot
  • A parent, guardian, or counselor knows where you're applying
  • Never pay a fee or give bank details to get an internship

Signs of a fake internship

  • They ask you to pay for training, equipment, or an application.
  • They want your Social Security number or bank details before an interview.
  • The whole interview happens by text message or chat app.
  • The offer comes fast, pays a lot, and needs no experience.

See any of these? Stop and tell an adult before you reply.
